How to Ensure Your Child Gets Plenty of Sleep Every Night

Although the majority of students would love to get the recommended amount of sleep every night, they often don't, thanks to the piles of homework and studying they have to get done. While it may not seem like a big deal to give up an hour or two of sleep here and there, this can actually contribute to difficulties in school. To learn more about why sleep is so important for students, continue reading.

Why Your Child Needs to Sleep

Sleep is a must for all, but even more so for growing students. Sleep doesn't just affect a person's attitude in the morning, it can affect their entire day. When your child doesn't get a good amount of sleep they can have trouble concentrating in class, leading to lost information and confusion when it comes time to do homework. Over time, this can result in them falling behind and losing even more sleep trying to keep up. To ensure your child gets their work done on time and doesn't lose sleep over it, set up regular study hours and a homework time for them. Help them overcome their distractors so that they can get it all done efficiently and in a timely manner.

Create a Bedtime Routine

Having a regular bedtime is ideal since routine plays a big part in your child being able to fall asleep on time every night. Set a bedtime and then plan relaxing activities for your child to perform during the hour leading up to their bedtime. A warm bath, reading, or meditating are all great activities that can help them wind down and fall asleep faster. Avoid electronics and exercise right before bed since these can make falling asleep harder and can negatively affect the quality of their sleep.

How Many Hours of Sleep Does Your Child Need?

The number of hours your child should sleep every night will depend on their age. Smaller children often need the most sleep, while older students will perform well with fewer hours of sleep. Talk to your doctor to get the exact number. Keep in mind that sleeping too much isn't a good thing and can be an indicator of other issues.
